Why is MOT Testing Necessary

MOT tests must be carried out every year, and your car must pass its annual test to be legally roadworthy. Once your MOT has expired or if your car fails its MOT test, it won’t just be classed as roadworthy – your insurance will be invalid too. So MOT testing is an essential and unavoidable part of car ownership.

Luckily, an MOT won’t set you back too much – providing your car doesn’t need too much work to get it through the test, of course! In most cases brand new cars won’t require an MOT for the first three years, which is a nice little incentive if you’re considering a new car. It’s not just the cost of an MOT and the expense of any work or parts that are required afterwards though – it’s the hassle of finding a reputable garage too. For those of us who know very little about the mechanics of cars, and who are worried about ‘being taken for a ride’, finding a reputable and reliable car garage is a major consideration.

Of course, finding an MOT garage you can trust is especially important – as you’re placing your faith in the mechanics that certify your car and class it as roadworthy. Whenever you consider a garage for MOT testing, it is your responsibility to make sure it is MOT-certified. That is, it must be an approved garage that is certified to carry out MOTs – and as the bare minimum you should look for the sign displaying three triangles. This shows that the garage is an approved MOT center.

There are various directories that can help take the pressure off your shoulders. Uni part Car Care Centres (UCCC) lists UK MOT garages that are fully certified and qualified, and their garages are regularly rated and reviewed by their customers too – so you can read reviews on each and every garage to see what others think of the service and price. What’s more, you can even sign up to UCCC’s reminder service – so you’ll never forget your MOT renewal date again!
